Foods to Avoid with Diabetes
Diabetes is a disease that affects the way the body processes sugar. There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes usually occurs in children. In this case, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body develops insulin resistance. Diabetes symptoms include an increase in thirst, hunger, and urination, blurred vision, and frequent infections.
Food plays an important part in a diabetic’s life, and here are some foods to avoid in order to keep blood sugar stable and healthy:
1. Drinks containing sugar
Just about everyone can agree that soda does not do anyone any good. However, other beverages contain the same amount of sugar as soda. Take orange juice for example. A 12-ounce glass of OJ is equal to a 12-ounce glass of soda. Watch out for sweetened coffees and teas, sports drinks, and even chocolate milk.
2. Dried fruit
The problem with dried fruit is that the water is removed, which means the sugar becomes concentrated. So, the sugar content is greater in dried fruit. For example, there are three times the amount of carbs and calories in a cup of raisins as opposed to a cup of grapes. It is better to just eat the grapes.
3. Refined grains
Refine grains, such as white flour, white rice, white flour, white bread, are missing the bran and germ. Refined grains tend to have a negative effect on glucose levels. Instead, reach for the whole grain pasta and bread.
4. Fried foods
It may be hard to resist fried chicken, fish, or even doughnuts, but the amount of fat in these foods can cause blood sugar levels to rise. Instead try broiling, grilling, or baking your meat and fish. If you really can not resist having a piece of fried chicken, replace the french fries with a fresh green salad.
5. Salty foods
Usually, when you think about diabetes you think sugar and not salt. However, salty foods tend to raise a person’s blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause a stroke and both are common problems for those who have diabetes. Skip foods such as crackers, pizza, cold cuts, and soups.
6. Mixed cocktails
Alcohol is not your friend if you have diabetes. Mix alcohol with soda or juice and your blood sugar level will spike. If you want to enjoy a drink with friends, consider sipping on a glass of red wine. Though, check with your doctor first.
7. Sweetened cereals
There is no doubt that cereal is a convenient breakfast food. However, sugary cereals usually contain more sugar than what is found in most candies. Even cereals that are promoted as being healthy tend to be loaded in carbohydrates. Make some quick eggs for breakfast instead.
8. Snack foods
Everyone wants a snack every once in a while, but it is important to read the labels. Snacks such as potato chips and popcorn can be problematic for diabetics. They contain items such as carbs, sodium, and saturated fats.
