Lesser Known Symptoms of Diabetes

Lesser Known Symptoms of Diabetes

Weight loss, frequent urination, increased thirst and frequent hunger are some of the signs of symptoms of type 2 diabetes. When many people have any of those symptoms, they go to the doctor. However, there are lesser known symptoms of diabetes that many people can easily ignore. It is a good idea to get tested for diabetes if you notice any of the following lesser know symptoms:

1. Darker patches of skin
If you develop dark patches on your skin, then this may be a sign of diabetes. Many people develop darker patches around their neck. The dark patches may cover a large area. However, they may only develop in the folds of the skin. Your body produces higher insulin levels than normal when you have type 2 diabetes. Insulin causes the cells to reproduce at a much higher rate.

2. Recurrent infections
If you have diabetes, then your immune system will be weaker than normal. That is why you will be more likely to develop infections. You are more prone to bladder infections, yeast infections, skin infections and vaginal infections. Your white blood cells will not be able to travel through your blood as efficiently when your blood sugar levels are too high.

3. Vision changes
It is a good idea for you to go to the eye doctor if you are having trouble seeing. However, vision changes are sometimes a sign of type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar can affect every part of your body. This includes your eye. High blood sugar can cause your eyes to swell. It can also alter the fluid levels inside of your eyes.

4. Sexual dysfunction
Men who have diabetes are more likely to develop erectile dysfunction. High blood sugar can damage the blood vessels and nerves. That is why it can be difficult for you to get or maintain an erection. There has been evidence to suggest that women who have diabetes are also more likely to have sexual problems.

5. Itching
Because diabetes can damage the nerve cells in your body, you are likely to develop itching. This itching can affect any part of your body. However, it is most likely to affect the hands and feet. High blood sugar can also reduce blood circulation. This can also cause peeling.

6. Fruity-smelling breath
Everyone wants their breath to smell good. However, if your breath smells sweet and fruity (without fruit flavored gum), then you may have type 2 diabetes. This is a sign of diabetic ketoacidosis. When your blood sugar is high, your body produces more ketones. The ketones develop because your body breaks down fat instead of glucose when your blood sugar is too high.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication. If you suspect that you have it, you will need to see a doctor as soon as possible.
